Where Black Friday Really Began
Black Friday started in the United States, not as a sale, but as a nickname used by Philadelphia police in the 1950s. The day after Thanksgiving brought hordes of shoppers, tourists, and traffic into the city for the Army-Navy football game. Officers had to work long shifts to manage the chaos, and local retailers quickly noticed the massive post-holiday footfall.
By the 1980s, American stores rebranded the name with a more positive meaning: the idea that this was the day their sales figures moved from “red” to “black”, signalling profits. With that, the modern shopping tradition was born - and soon became one of the biggest retail events of the year.
When Black Friday Arrived in the UK
It wasn’t until 2010, when Amazon first introduced Black Friday deals to the UK, that British shoppers encountered the concept. Other major retailers quickly followed. Suddenly, the last Friday in November became synonymous with flash sales, early-morning queues, and online shopping frenzies.
By the mid-2010s, Black Friday had fully integrated into the UK retail landscape. Whether shopping online or in high streets, customers embraced the idea of a dedicated day for major price drops before Christmas.
Black Friday in the UK Today
Today, Black Friday in the UK is one of the biggest shopping periods of the year, even rivalling Boxing Day sales. While the early years were marked by crowded stores and viral videos, the event has largely moved online, making it more convenient- and far less chaotic.
Retailers across the UK - from tech giants to fashion brands to small independents - use Black Friday to offer competitive prices. And with shoppers eager to stretch their budgets during the festive season, the tradition isn’t going anywhere anytime soon!
So, in the spirit of Black Friday, NSS is offering reduced prices across hundreds of products.
